Performance Management Thinking (PMT)

Dr. Van Meter
Dr. Van Meter
Van Meter and Associates has provided training and consulting services to law enforcement and fire services for over 25 years.  I served in the military, spent 15 years in sworn law enforcement and completed graduate work in labor and human resources management and human performance technology.  The most important and practical piece of advice I can offer management is credited to Albert Einstein who correctly observed that (paraphrased) - -problems can’t be solved with the same thinking that created them.  Everything we offer at VMA in the way of training, services, and products is centered on that simple, but golden, nugget of wisdom and truth.

For decades, management thinking has been too employee centered.  The belief has been that employees must be treated the same, and unless management has an air-tight system for directing and controlling its employees’ conduct and behavior management is the culpable party when problems occur. That type of thinking is defeating and has often lead to frivolous lawsuits by disgruntle employees, unfounded charges of illegal discrimination, and substandard performance from all but the most dedicated employees.

Facts are that once employees have been screened, selected, trained, resourced, and are accepting a paycheck, management has the right and obligation (legal and moral) to hold employees accountable for producing the level of performance expected of their positions.  In short, the solution for many of management’s people problems is found in shifting thinking from feeding the bears to requiring the bears to perform. I call this Performance Management Thinking (PMT). PMT honors citizens’ right to a high level of quality service; administrators’ right to a productive work force; and, productive employees’ right to insist that management recognize their accomplishments and are willing to hold accountable those who fail to shoulder their fair-share of the work load. Experience has shown that when properly implemented - - PMT works.  We always welcome opportunities to explain how and to prove it.

 My sincerest regards,

Van
